Sinharaja Forest
Sri Lanka's last swathes of rainforests
Sinharaja Forest, Sri Lanka’s last swathe of primary rainforest covers an undulating terrain of ridges and valleys crisscrossed by a network of streams. After facing the worst commercial logging, in 1989, UNESCO declared the forest a World Heritage Site. National level protection, fund allocation and revenue generated by tourism since, has made this a conservation success story. Today, the Sinharaja Forest hosts rich biodiversity that can trace its origins to Gondwanaland, the ancient landmass of primeval Earth, and has evolved since. The astonishing endemism of the biodiversity found here – the highly localized occurrence of species found only in this region of the world and nowhere else!
