Kumbhalgarh
India's Own Great Wall
Kumbhalgarh, colloquially known as The Eye of Mewar, looks out sternly over the border the Mewar (present-day Udaipur) and Marwar (present-day Jodhpur) kingdoms. Its sturdy ramparts weave their way along the Aravalli Mountain range for over 20 miles, broad enough for six horsemen to ride abreast! This massive 15th century fortress was once considered impregnable and even today, it has a forbidding façade with seven spiked gateways. Kumbhalgarh has been the bastion of several brave and fearless Rajput warriors and its walls continue to stand as testimony to their courage and skill in battle.
