Ahilya Fort
A family-run heritage fort overlooking the sacred Narmada river
This 250-year-old fort is largely unchanged from the days when it was once the capital of one of India’s celebrated women rulers, Ahilya Bai Holkar. Perched on the edge of a cliff, enclosed within massive walls, Ahilya Fort has staggering views over the sacred Narmada River and the ghats immediately below. The rooms retain the feeling of the epoch, while bringing guests modern conveniences, which ensure a comfortable stay. No two rooms are in the same building, and privacy is assured at this peaceful resort where courtyards, verandahs, hidden terraces and stone walkways are sprinkled inside the fort walls. The prince who now resides in Ahilya Fort is an acclaimed chef and personally overseas the kitchen, guaranteeing a memorable and delightful culinary experience. There is no formal dining room, so the location of meals varies, either outside under the grand neem trees, on one of the terraces overlooking the river, poolside, or in the Chamber of Winds overlooking the Narmada River.
