Dudhwa
An offbeat wildlife destination in the Terai foothills
Straddling the Indo-Nepal border, Dudhwa National Park is one of the few remaining examples of a thriving Terai ecosystem. The Terai is a unique belt of marshy jungle lying between the lower foothills of the Himalayas and the plains, which once boasted a rich biodiversity. With fertile alluvial river plains, today, the region hosts a booming population. The habitat of jungles, wetlands and grasslands offers refuge to several mammals, notably the one-horned rhino, the royal Bengal tiger, the Asian elephant, Indian leopard and various deer species. Dudhwa is also home to over 350 birds with several migratory species roosting here in winters. A truly offbeat wildlife destination, Dudhwa is a far cry from the crowds and cameras, queues and chaos of other national parks!
