Namdroling Monastery
A glimpse into India's Tibetan culture
Coorg’s lush forests and bamboo thickets, interspersed with coffee-and-spice plantations and a few waterfalls, make it a favourite destination among locals and foreigners alike. Yet amidst the plantations, there is a surprise that awaits the intrepid traveller – the largest Buddhist monastery, outside Tibet. Namdroling Monastery, near Bylakuppe is a one-of-a-kind experience in South India, otherwise teeming with temples and ruins. Buddhist chants, fluttering flags, red-robed monks and initiates create a serene atmosphere around Namdroling monastery – with its intricately decorated rainbow-arched roof and ornately painted murals.
