Haridwar
A haloed pilgrimage site along the Ganges
Haridwar, a word that denotes a gateway to Lord Shiva or Lord Vishnu (depending on the spelling) is ideally named as it leads to other Hindu pilgrimage sites in the state. With the sacred river Ganga winding its way past the town, Haridwar is one of the seven holiest places in India – with numerous ghats (steps leading down to a river), temples and an assortment of devout folk. Haridwar’s spiritual legacy is resonant in its ancient monuments, ashrams, bathing tanks and learning centres, as also its 12 year celebration of the Kumbh Mela – the festival of the pot of ambrosia.
