Nainital
A lakeside colonial summer retreat
Girded by the snow-capped range to the north, stretching into plains to the south, Nainital is a picturesque little town that skirts the edges of a pear-shaped lake. Legend has it, that while Lord Rudra, an avatar of Shiva, the destroyer in Indian mythology was carrying the charred remains of his consort, Sati towards the Himalayas, her eyes or ‘nain’ in the local language fell near the lake or ‘tal’, giving it the name ‘Nainital’. As British summer retreat, and with Nainital’s grand panorama of the Himalayas, it has long been a great favourite with tourists – both domestic and international.
