India’s Independence Struggle
Retrace a disturbing yet brave chapter of India's colonial history
Like the French and American independence stories (no, and we don’t mean the one with the aliens taking over the Empire State Building!), India also has an Independence chapter in its history. Start your lesson at Amritsar’s Partition Museum where the story of ‘the greatest migration in human history’ is recounted through numerous newspaper clipping, audio recordings, sketches of refugee camps and everyday objects that held a deeper significance for families. The Partition Museum pieces together a bitter history, yet through its stories of bravery and solidarity offers a glimmer of hope. Continue on to Jallianwalah Bagh, where a brutal massacre was carried out and countless innocents perished. End your trail at the Wagah border between India and Pakistan, where a flag ceremony with a proud, fiery display of martial discipline by the Indian and Pakistani armies takes place two hours before sunset every evening.
