Monastery Excursions
Retrace the history of the second-wave of Buddhism in Ladakh
From Nimo, one can drive to the Alchi monastery, a popular destination with beautiful frescoes on its walls. The local tradition and the records borne by the inscriptions differ on the builder of the monastery, yet ascribe the date between 958 and 1055 – making it the region’s oldest monastery. Continue on to the Lamayuru monastery – with a fantastic history of an Indian scholar who dried up a lake in the valley, to found the region’s first Bon monastery. Lamayuru is one of the largest and oldest gompas in Ladakh, with 150 permanent monks in residence. The Lamayuru monastery hosts two annual masked dance festivals in the second and fifth months of the Tibetan lunar calendar.
