Turtuk Encounters
Interact with the indigenous borderland people of Turtuk village
A short distance away from Diskit, on the banks of the Shyok river lies the charming Turtuk village. It hosts an ethnic population of Balti-speaking folk who hadn’t come into contact with the tourists before 2010. This is India’s last outpost fringing the Gilgit-Baltistan region controlled by Pakistan. Please note that photography is prohibited here, yet a visit to Turtuk offers an interesting insight into the conflicted cultural identities of borderland communities.
