Old Goa & beyond
Visit Goa's historic landmarks
Start your day off at Dona Paula with sweeping, cliffside views of the Arabian Sea and the site of a melodramatic, tragic romance between a young couple. Drive past Panjim, the capital of this sleepy state with its broad seaside avenue on towards Old Goa where you can visit the Basilica de Bom Jesus containing the corpse of St Francis Xavier, a missionary who brought the Christian faith to Indian shores and the Se Cathedral, the seat of the Archbishop of Goa. Imbibe the colonial flavour with a visit to the Palacio Dos Deao, a 213-year-old mansion built in a Hindu – Portuguese style by a nobleman and dean of church. Enjoy lunch at the Palacio Dos Deao with views of the wild Kushavati river. Then visit the Menezes Braganza House – Goa’s grandest colonial mansion of over 350 years with a rich history and ornate furnishings.
