Chandigarh
North India's planned town
Named after a nearby temple of Chandi, a warrior form of goddess Parvati, the consort of Lord Shiva, Chandigarh is overlaid with history. From a recorded habitation of the Harrapan civilization, an incomplete yet well-planned layout designed by a Swiss-French architect, and as a post-Independence state capital carved out to quell political differences, Chandigarh, today is a capital of both the states of Haryana and Punjab. Without any crowded bazaars, Chandigarh lacks the typical bustle of older Indian towns but is the country’s most orderly city.
