Wayanad
A hidden history amidst raindrenched forests
The thick rainforests of Wayanad hide a history of human habitation with archaeological evidence of cave paintings that date back to 10th Century BC. Today, Wayanad’s landscape has been claimed by plantations of coffee, tea, spices, cocoa, plantain and vanilla that thrive amidst gushing waterfalls, and support the myriad wildlife of the biodiversity hotspot of the mountainous Western Ghats. The Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary forms an integral part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve – and is well-known for secretive, endemic species that inhabit only this habitat, and no other in the world.
